KEY STAGE 3

YEAR 7 – 9 | AGE  11 – 14

Key Stage 3 is a part of the National Curriculum that sets out which subjects have to be taught to children between the ages of 11 and 14 in Years 7 to 9. Key Stage 3 is taught in secondary schools and core subjects such as English, Maths and Science must be taught to comply with the National Curriculum in England.

Common Entrance Examinations – 13+

Although there are no national tests taken in Key Stage 3, and instead, students are assessed by their teachers through coursework or in-school tests. There are sets of examinations taken by boys and girls for entrance to senior independent schools at or 13+. Key Stage 3 students are expected to reach level 5 or 6 as compared to the Government standards.

The 13+ Common Entrance Examinations are formulated by the Independent Schools Examinations Board (ISEB) and taken by boys and girls for entrance to senior independent boys’ and mixed schools at age 13+. Children at the age of 13+, are required to sit examinations in core subjects such as English, Mathematics and Science in November, January and May or June of Year 8 prior to entry to senior school the following September.

The 13+ Common Entrance Examinations which is designed by its creators to have rigorous syllabuses provides students with a strong academic focus and an excellent technique to prepare for GCSE. During Year 9, students are required to choose subjects they want to study in Key Stage 4. It is important that they choose subjects they are competent in and enjoy as well as beneficial to their chosen career. In addition, the subjects they choose, which must include Maths, English and Science, will also be part of their GCSE exams.
